8. Sense of purpose
The hospital and rehab center have allowed me to do quite a few things again. Of course I am grateful for this and also that I can live in my own home again. For me this alone is not enough, I am not dissatisfied but would like to have a meaningful existence. Why is meaningfulness so important to me? I have looked up a few things about this (i.e. not made up by myself) to get an answer to this question.
Meaningfulness is the way you give meaning to your existence. You literally feel a “reason” for living, for being there. The search for meaning comes from the need to experience that your life is valuable, that your life has purpose. Having a purpose or meaning in life can have a profound impact on your mental and even physical health. For example, people with a strong sense of purpose are better able to cope with setbacks and stressful situations.
Why do people want to get involved with others? You do so without necessarily expecting anything in return or profit from it. Helping others gives you a sense of belonging, but also a sense of pride or pleasure: you start to look at yourself differently, you build self-confidence and learn new skills. You can be there, ‘feel welcome’.
