The students choose which lessons they participate in and their experience, knowledge and interest are an essential part. Teacher’s explanation
The word ‘’tattoo’’ derives from the Tahitian word ‘Ta-tau’, what literally means ‘to write’. Tattooing means: to apply non-erasable pigments to the dermis.
Since the beginning of mankind, tattooing exists. In former times, as part of the mourning process, ashes were rubbed into self-made wounds, so that carbon particles remain. There are clues that even 12.000 years before Christ this method was applied. Later on, with use of a needle or another sharp object, like a thorn, people would sting little holes in the skin and an insoluble pigment was rubbed into the skin. This took place around 8000 years before Christ.

Why do people take tattoos?
- Beautiful, like jewelry for your body.
- Memory, to someone or something (event)
- Cosmetic, has something to do beautification of the appearance: scars, burns, birth marks or wine stains can be made less notable through use of tattoos. Also lost eyebrows can be replaced by tattoos.
- Intimidation, the carrier of a tattoo shows that he is part of a certain criminal organization. Sometimes the tattoo can mean something specific, for example: in the US and Canada it is thought that a tattoo in the face with the shape of a tear would mean that someone killed a member of a rival gang.
- Maturation, in certain cultures, it is custom that a person will get a tattoo when he comes into puberty.
- Inclusion, to a certain club or organization.
- Part of culture.
