----------
A new boy is coming.
Suppose; you are a supervisor in group 'Tatoe' of boys' home 'Bijlmerknoop', where a number of boys stay. They go to a VBO-school in Amsterdam.
One day Rames, a Moroccan boy, joins the group.
He turns out to be an excellent soccer player and soon he is part of the group.
But he also has less pleasant habits.
He does not listen to the intern at all; he does not talk to women.
He also thinks women are inferior and shows exaggerated macho behavior.
Soon the atmosphere in the group is unpleasant and the intern no longer feels safe.
Questions:
a. As a group leader, how would you act in this situation?
b. Do you think that as a group leader you should take into account behaviors of group members that they have learned in their culture and that you perceive as less pleasant?
c. Where do you draw the line?
Continued situation sketch:
One day the group of boys comes home from school furious.
They have to play the championship game at school and it falls exactly in Ramadan: the period of fasting for Muslims.
Rames will not be in optimal condition and without him they can forget about the championship because the match cannot be played on any other day. You are guiding the soccer team.
Questions:
d. How do you as supervisors react to this situation?
e. Put yourself in the boys' shoes: how do you think they view Rames?
