Rewarding ahead of time
In the group I worked, we had a fireplace. It was group policy that it was allowed the light the fireplace when the kids were acting well and the atmosphere was pleasant. It was therefore a reward. How surprising it was when, together with my colleague, we lit the fireplace at a moment when the atmosphere was really bad. It was our idea to break through the unpleasant mood, and by lighting the fireplace, overturn the atmosphere. We succeeded that time, and it was lovely to see how this worked.
The outcome was that you can not only reward afterwards, but also ahead of time.
