My experience.

Intensive contact with a client.

I was paired with a girl that was a victim of sexual abuse. Presumably this was way she had fear and was hesitant towards men and boys. In the treatment plan it was stated that I would be paired with her, with the intention of gaining new and positive experiences with a man. It was important for me to carefully observe her and to adjust my behavior to what I perceived. To give her the space to reach out to me and let her decide the pace. Maintaining eye contact was an essential element in our communication. After about half a year, our contact had improved so much that she would take it upon herself to come and sit next to me on the couch when I was going to read to her.
Working with this girl was both intense and confronting. Especially because it comes close to my own standards and values. But also sad, because it’s shocking when you read the files and learn about the things this girl has been through. Positive, because we were interacting with each other to build a future for this girl, along with the scars she had suffered through her past.
