Colleague with a disability.
Under the sink (August Hermann Francke-house in Rotterdam)
The second group where I worked was the Sibbe. I worked here together with a couple, of which the lady was suffering from muscular dystrophy and was forced to use a wheelchair. From all of her limbs, she was only able to use one arm. This colleague had a conflict with a 5 year old boy who keeps walking away from her. She kept following him through the entire room in her wheelchair. At a certain moment, she had trapped him under the kitchen sink. The boy, while sitting down, tried to kick the wheelchair away from him. I went to sit down on the ground, behind the wheelchair, in order for the boy not being able to get away. Besides this, I handed my colleague a rolling pin, which she could use to ‘’poke’’ him in order to make a connection. My part was to be the arms and legs of my colleague, without having any interaction apart from my colleague.
This way of cooperation with a colleague was new to me, which I experienced as something special. Special, because force and physical capabilities played a big part in this.
