Boy don't listen to me.

Client refuses to go upstairs (Foundation for youth guidance in Delft)

I was working in a institute for youngsters, aged 14 to 20, with behavioral issues. One of the boys, Peter, was behaving annoyingly at the table and was sent upstairs by me to sit in his room. He didn’t feel like listening, to which I responded angrily. I picked him up, carried him up the stairs and put him down in his own room. Peter didn’t resist because he knew that I was stronger.

When I returned downstairs, Ricardo said to me: ‘’You wouldn’t try that with me, Evert’’. I became silent, took Peter downstairs, and explained the way I dealt with the situation.

A couple of facts: Peter was 14 years, 1.50 meters long and did not practice any kind of sports. Ricardo was 18 years, 1.90 meters long, practiced kickboxing and was a true athlete. I was working on my own and there were 6 youngsters sitting at the table.

These situations, I use in class of the educational program ‘Social work’ (Power, tools/means of power and abuse of power).
